CUTTING A US$300BN LIABILITY : ITS AMERICA'S NEIL SCHUSTER SEES ITS SAVING LIVES AND COSTS

In this article, Neil D. Schuster, president and CEO of ITS America, describes how Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) has transformed transportation over the past ten years in terms of how transportation is built, consumed, financed and paid for in the U.S. He mentions the Integrated Network of Transportation Information (INTI), a concept devised by ITS America in which information collected from diverse sources is interpreted, shared, and then used in managing the transportation system and information travelers. Looking ahead at the next 10 years, the author predicts that a modest investment in ITS can make a huge reduction in the $300 million the U.S. spends annually in dealing with congestion and safety problems, as well as saving tens of thousands of lives each year.
