PORTABLE SIGNALS RESPOND FAST, SOLVE TRAFFIC CRUNCH

This article describes the use of portable temporary signals used at a busy intersection of I-10 and Estrella Parkway in Goodyear, Arizona. Traffic volume had become unmanageable and collisions were frequent, but the city could not accelerate installation of traffic signals due to a supply problem. City engineers turned to a temporary intersection signal system with a portable signal mast arm and wireless NEMA control system. A further problem—too few trailers—was solved by adapting the control system to pre-existing trailers owned by a rental agency. Once in place, congestion cleared up, collisions decreased and the work zone was safer for contractors installing the permanent signals.
