The whole issue of this journal is devoted to the RER which was extended by 17 km of additional lines in December 1977. The first part outlines the history of the RER, part 2 deals with the construction of the tunnel, the architecture of the stations, and various types of equipment: tracks, mechanical staircases, electrical equipment, traffic signals, telecommunications, energy supply, ventilation. New techniques were used, some of them being described: uplifts in large structures, aerodynamic phenomena caused by trains moving, centralized control. Part three describes the operation of the system.
