Milan Metro: Forty Years Old and Still Growing

The first Metro project in Milan was launched at the beginning of the 1950s. It has just celebrated its fortieth anniversary of operation. Line 1 of the Milan metro, was only 12 km long at its inception. It has been substantially extended since then and today Milan has three traditional metro lines, one automated light rail line and the city will soon have two additional new automated lines totaling 102 km serving 125 stations. Today, the metro transports over 330 million people a year, or 55% of all public transport users. This marks an opportunity to remember the pre-eminent role played by metro systems in terms of transportation network organization within large metropolitan areas. Metros continue to provide quality benchmarks with regard to speed , service frequency and regularity for all modes of public transport, but particularly for bus rapid transit and light rail systems.
