Driving and Medical Aspects of Excessive Daytime Sleepiness: A Consensus Workshop

An expert workshop was held during July 2002 to consider the implications of the medical aspects of Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDA) to driving. This report is an account of the workshop and has been prepared in close consultation with all participants. It includes a collection of position papers that reflect participants' views prior to the workshop, as well as the group's views and recommendations at the end of the workshop and a list of proposed revisions to the relevant Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency documentation. Points of discussion were (1) the contribution of medical causes of daytime sleepiness to accident involvement, (2) narcolepsy and other neurological causes of excessive daytime sleepiness, (3) sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome, and (4) clinical responsibility and health education.
