Mental Representation of Traffic Signs: Role of Sign Complexity and Semantic Information

Signs are key elements of the traffic environment. They inform,, restrict, warn, and admonish traffic users who must keep track of the real time of the information provided by the signs in order to perceive it, understand it, remember it, and combine it with other pieces of information and their own goals so they can make a right decision on what to do next. Little in the extensive body of literature about traffic signs has been said about the way traffic users represent sign information internally and the way such representations are combined with one another and with other pieces of information and users' goals. The present work attempts to address such issues.
