Emerging Toll-Road Environments around the World
This paper describes how there are some common themes emerging around the world in the application of toll road solutions for the expansion of the road infrastructure. These include an ever widening gap between available public funds and the demands of upgrading an ageing infrastructure, increasing congestion levels in major cities and increasing interest in new technology and operating models. This paper examines the trends on a region by region basis, covering North America, South America, Europe, Australia/New Zealand and Asia. Emerging challenges are identified in the arena of customer centric operating models in competitive, interoperable tolling environments. It is concluded that the era of open road tolling has brought new demands in the delivery of high levels of customer service, comprehensive product and service development and operational efficiency.
