Evaluating Coating Performance in Severe Marine Environments: Investigating the Test Method

This article presents a summary of the results of the performance of different paint systems tested in accordance with the draft standard ISO 2034, together with the results after a neutral salt fog test. On the basis of experimental results, the article discusses the suitability of the testing on the currently defined acceptability by thresholds. Also discussed is the use of the scanning Kelvin probe technique to study the kinetics of delamination at the metal/paint interface, e.g., from a defect in the paint system. The study finds the accelerated aging test ISO 20340 to be unsuitable, as it appears far too severe and not very selective. In view of the present results, the test should be redefined and optimized in order to provide a simple test for corrosivity category C5 M that can be more readily correlated with natural behavior.
