Coating Ballast and Cargo Tanks on Ships
This article summarizes and updates an earlier article on the issue of designing, construction and operation of double hulled tankers to better protect them against corrosion. It is obvious that the operating conditions jn the ballast and cargo tanks of the double hull tankers accelerate both the initiation and the rate of corrosion. The article emphasizes urgent need to expand the understanding of the physical properties of coatings to better understand how they age; conducting water absorption/desorption studies is another inexpensive way to find good information. Shipbuilders need to control the quality of their subcontractors. Owners should also train their crews for proper monitoring of the quality of onboard coating, its maintenance, and its repair.
