VR Goes from Strength to Strength

Net profit in 2004 for Finland's national railway operator, VR, increased by an impressive 25% to Euro 51.7 million, mainly as a result of increasing traffic and tight control of costs. Passenger traffic rose to a record 60.1 million journeys last year, with the number of people making long distance rail trips growing by 1.8%, this despite discounts on air fares affecting longer distance journeys. VR carried 42.7 million tonnes of freight, a fall of 1.9% compared with 2003, although domestic freight grew by 5,1% to a record 26.3 million tonnes thanks to the forest industry products. VR has awarded four contracts for passenger trains during the last three years. These trains are now coming into service and the last one will be introduced a year from now.
