SJ Achieves a Remarkable Turnaround

This article examines the remarkable turnaround achieved during the last two years by SJ, Sweden's state owned national passenger operator. The company went from the brink of bankruptcy to profits through a recovery program designed to reduce costs and improve net profits by introducing new business models aimed at increasing margins. On the revenue side, SJ changed its business model for its intercity services: all intercity trains are now priced individually; of all tickets sold today, 50% are low fare ones, but the company is still in a stronger position. Additionally, another problem that has been solved: in early 2001, punctuality had dropped to 65, and today it is between 85 and 87%.
