Going Into Orbit: Bridges on the Glasgow Ring Road

The contractor originally had a two year timescale for the new 24.4 km dual, two lane M77/Glasgow Southern Orbital that was built for East Renfrewshire Council. The timescale meant that several of the route's main structures had to be constructed simultaneously. At one time, falsework and formwork was being used on 13 bridges and underpasses; and all 31 structures had to be completed from a temporary works standpoint in just 14 months. Three factors were considered central to the fact that the contractor was able to meet the program requirements: (1) the entire temporary works solution used the same standard and system throughout; (2) all of the components were readily available from stock at the nearby Glasgow location; and (3) the attention paid to detailed advanced planning which ensured that production rates were maintained and that the project achieved its economic targets.
