Impact of Permafrost Thaw on Airfield and Road Infrastructures in Nunavik - Quebec
Impact du degel du pergelisol sur les infrastructures de transport aerien et routier au Nunavik - Quebec
Roads and airfields in the Nord-du-Quebec region, especially those built on permafrost, have been impacted by climatic warming. Permafrost thaw due to rising temperatures causes damage to the transportation infrastructure. This paper examines permafrost thaw and its attendant damage in the Nunavik region of Quebec. This sparsely populated area is home to Inuit and Cree villages connected by gravel roads, gravel airstrips and port facilities. Plans are in place to pave these roads and airstrips by 2009. The paper explores the damage caused by permafrost thaw to both gravel and paved roads and airstrips.
