Mass Movement: Launching Girders and Segmental Construction

Precast segmental construction has become probably the most common method of construction of long or multiple span structures, particularly for roads and railroads. Precasting of bridge decks involves an industrialized process which allows the mass production of standardized components. This article reviews some of the many different options for bridge erection. The options include: erection by overhead launching girder; erection by the use of underslung launching girder; and erecting the span on falsewood supported from below. Both benefits and disadvantages of these methods are briefly discussed.
