In this article, the authors highlight the burgeoning application of Galileo GNSS technologies in European transportation communities by describing pilot projects in the maritime and road sectors. MARitime GALileo (MARGAL), along with European geostationary navigation overlay service (EGNOS), is used in addressing challenges in port and harbor approach, navigation, docking, inland waterway monitoring, precise navigation, and calamity abatement. Active Road Management Assisted by Satellite (ARMAS) is currently being used to research road usage charging aspects. The GIANT (GNSS Introduction in the AviatioN secTor) project will be the first time in Europe where GNSS demonstrations will be performed onboard a commercial aircraft. GRAIL (GNSS introduction in the RAIL) sector will continue to explore applications in European Rail Traffic Management System/EuropeanTrain Control System (ERTMS/ETCS), as well as demonstrations on an operational high-speed rail line. The article closes with a shorter discussion of location-based GNSS services (LBS) for personal mobility, and Galileo’s receiver development.
