This article looks at how automated baggage handling systems can help airports increase their efficiency in operations and enhance passenger satisfaction. Flight turnaround times can be improved, as bar coding and radio frequency identification (RFID) technology help ground crews ensure that passenger receive the right baggage. RFID, when integrated with baggage handling, incorporates flight scheduling and passenger information systems. The end result is a system that sorts and conveys baggage, as well as providing tracking, tracing, and system performance information. The article relates that an efficient baggage handling system should take into account systems design and layout, and be able to adapt to change.
