THE FREEDOM OF CHOICE : GROUND HANDLING AT JFK TERMINAL 4: THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE

This article looks at ground handling operations at Terminal 4 at JFK International Airport in New York, noting that its success can be strongly attributed to the controlled competitive environment it offers. Unlike most terminals which require airlines to work with a specific service provider, Terminal 4 allows airlines to have a choice from four ground handlers selected by its management. The competitive environment is viewed as essential to having the operators provide the best service possible. Collaborative efforts amongst the service providers are also encouraged, and these have proven to be beneficial in terms of innovative solutions being brought to problems, as well as in giving the providers some collective clout over airlines when needed. The article gives an overview of the four ground handling companies, with focus on their distinct differences. The companies that are profiled include Swissport, ASIG, Triangle Aviation Services, and Evergreen Eagle.
