This article gives an overview of a major capital construction program in line for Washington Dulles International Airport. Faced with a significant increase in traffic volume over the past few years, the airport will embark on a $3.4 billion project which will include a state-of-the-art underground airport train system, a new air traffic control tower, and construction of the first of two new runways. The article notes that the airport brings a large and growing economic benefit to the Metropolitan Washington region. Economic statistics from 2002 indicate that Dulles Airport produced close to 19,000 direct jobs which resulted in $864 million in employee earnings, $3.7 billion in business revenue, and a $161 million contribution to state and local taxes.
