CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY : ION'S AUTONOMOUS LAWN MOWER COMPETITION

In this article the author outlines the Institute of Navigation's annual Autonomous Lawn Mower Competition. All of the vehicles in the most recent competition have upgraded their DC drive motors as well as added a number of optical ranging systems in contrast with the previous models. Although there have been vast improvement in the efficacy of each team's vehicles, the first-place prize was awarded to a vehicle which only cut 28 square meters out of the total 150 square meters on the field. This vehicle, designed by students and faculty at Ohio State University, required designers to take into account a myriad of issues in every stage of the vehicle’s development, from design, to beta testing, and to final evaluation.
