LESSONS LEARNED FROM SWISS SAFETY REFURBS
This article focuses on the difficulties and constraints placed on tunnel refurbishment programs. Ventilation systems and escape facilities are identified as two of the most important components of tunnel facilities needing to be refurbished. Recommendations are suggested for bring these components up-to-date, and a refurbishment process is detailed. The article then describes specific challenges that have been encountered during the refurbishment of the Milchbuck Tunnel in Switzerland. The three-phase program involves structural repairs and technical improvements, improvements to the tunnel’s safety, and optimization of the escape facilities.
