This paper provides a descriptive statistical analysis of proprietary automobile import data, supplemented by interviews with corporate informants conducted by the authors and extracts from the business press. Provided is a primer on the car carrier industry that highlights the increasing degree of corporate concentration. Concentration processes have led to dominance by a few Japanese and Scandinavian carriers. The paper then focuses on the structure of Japanese conglomerates and their inter-firm relationships, and provides a theoretical discussion of inter-firm network formation. The main governance regimes in the trade are also summarized.
