A Single Procedure for Aging Both Modified and Unmodified Binders by the Rapid Microwave Method
The eight neat core asphalts used in the Strategic Highway Research Program were aged using the rapid microwave method. Their rheological properties agree with those obtained after the Rolling Thin Film Oven (short term aging) and the Pressure Aging Vessel (long term aging) methods. Another set of eight binders (three unmodified and five modified) were subjected to the same microwave aging procedure. Their rheological parameters, including the master curves, also agreed with those obtained after the currently used short and long term aging techniques. Precision of the proposed microwave method, as well as the statistical difference between the two aging techniques have earlier been reported. The rapid microwave aging procedure developed recently for modified binders proved suitable for unmodified binders as well.
