LIGHTING - THE BIG QUESTION : THE POTENTIAL IMPACT OF A380 ON AIRFIELD LIGHTING EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF MUCH DEBATE RECENTLY

This article analyzes the impact of the A380 on runway lighting. The author examines the specifications of the new aircraft and existing runway regulations to determine the potential damage the craft could cause to runway lights. Results from recent wind-load and jet-blast tests confirm that airports do not need to replace existing elevated edge lights. Low protrusion inset lights are considered to be the least vulnerable. The author also briefly looks at features related to omni-directional and bi-directional lights, as well as low intensity and high intensity lights.
