STRANDS OF SECURITY
This article gives a review of different methods for ground stabilization at excavation sites. Prior to the actual installation, it is important that the type of device and condition of the ground being treated be clearly understood. The article discusses the use of rock bolts and anchors for support purposes, and how the length of the bolts, diameter, angles, spacing, type of anchorage, grouting and corrosion protection will be determined by ground conditions. Additional methods include the use of self-drilling anchors, steel girder arches, and lattice girders. Timing of the installation of tunnel support and other ground stabilization is also an important consideration. The article concludes with a listing of products and suppliers.
