ON THE FAST TRACK TO SUCCESS IN ECUADOR

This article describes the San Francisco Hydroelectric Power Project under construction in Ecuador. Designed to bring relief to Ecuador’s current power deficit, the project is located completely underground and involves the construction of a 9km long hard rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) drive. The article gives an overview of the geology of the region and the various excavation procedures that have been used. The project is expected to increase the power capacity in Ecuador by close to 12 percent.
