LEVEL CROSSINGS OBSTACLE DETECTION SYSTEM USING STEREO CAMERAS

More than half of the railroad accidents in Japan occur at level crossings. This paper describes a new obstacle detection system, developed for use at railroad level crossings, which uses stereo cameras and image processing technology. Because the new system measures the three-dimensional shape of obstacles on crossings, it has been shown to be more effective than a single camera system. Results from field tests indicate that this new system can effectively detect pedestrians, two-wheeled vehicles, and wheelchairs.
