Passenger Waiting Time in an Airport and Expenditure Carried out in the Commercial Area

The relationship between the quality of the commercial services offered by an airport, the nature of the service, and the time that the customer has to consume the products offered influences the level of commercial activities. Passengers' waiting time to board influence their possibilities for consumption. This paper presents a methodology developed that estimates the relationship between passengers' waiting time and their expenditure in commercial area. Expenditure behaviors are analyzed according to trip purpose, be it for vacation-leisure or for work, and results are obtained for Asturias Airport, a medium sized airport in the north of Spain. The results showed that the average expenditure in the commercial area of out bound passengers was 4.26 British pounds. Looking only those who spent money, over 50% of the outbound passengers, the average expenditure reached 8.31. A clear relationship also existed between consumption in the commercial area and the length of the stay before boarding, The level of consumption, however, is independent of the waiting time.
