Planning track maintenance can produce headaches for those responsible for planning when faced with heavy traffic, heavy loads, short work windows, and limited budgets. This article takes a look at some of the advanced systems that are available to offer assistance to ensure that work gets done only when and where it is needed to squeeze more out of limited budget dollars. The following planning tools are described briefly: Holland Co's TrackSTAR fleet of hi-rail vehicles has provided geometry, track strength, and rail wear measurement for more than 125 different rail properties in the last 5 years; ENSCO Inc.'s automated m/w planning is the TrackIT Enterprise Data Management System that consists of three-tiered architecture with database and a Web-based front end has the capacity and the capability to store and manage track infrastructure, inspection and maintenance data which can be acquired via Internet or intranet; ENSCO's Vehicle Track Interaction System is an autonomous inspection tool that monitors excessive carbody accelerations and axle impacts; and ZETA-TECH's latest generation of Infrastructure Maintenance Management systems, such as its Maintenance of Way Information System (MOWIS), which has been developed to allow for the maintenance of a current and complete set of track and right-of-way data, and for continuing monitoring of track condition as well as maintenance effort being expended to maintain the track. Planning tools from these suppliers should make trackwork windows a more seamless part of operations, rather than an interruption.
