Dynamics of Change in the Port System of the Western Mediterranean
The evolving container shipping networks and changing status of ports in the Mediterranean basin have attracted interest because over the last decade, this region has undergone major expansion and restructuring. While much of the growth is ascribed to new transshipment ports that have been established in the south, the gateway ports continue to play an important role. The primary drivers of the traffic growth have been within 200 km. Regional trade growth has made direct calls more commercially attractive to the shipping lines, and new services have been established with Asia and North America. This enhanced level of accessibility, in turn, has contributed to economic development.
