Interstate 99 Research
Construction of the Interstate Highway 99 (I-99) in the vicinity of State College, Pennsylvania provides an opportunity for researchers to assess various facets of design and construction and monitor performance of the facility during construction and in service as well as investigating several environmental issues. Data obtained from such studies can be expected to enhance future design and construction activities related to highway and bridge construction in Pennsylvania. Phase I of the study was conducted under an open-end agreement between PENNDOT and Penn State that concluded on March 18, 2003. The portion of the study described in this report was initiated as an interim measure to provide continuity while other funding methods were explored to continue the monitoring phase of the project. The project covered the following tasks: Task 1 - Erosion and Sediment Controls; Task 2 - Movement and Stresses in Curved and Skewed Structures; Task 3 - Movement and Stresses in Integral Abutment Bridges; Task 4 - High-Performance Concrete Bridge Decks; Task 5 - Grouting Specifications and Details for Post-Tensioned Concrete; Task 6 - Geotechnical Site Investigation for Bridge Foundations; Task 7 - Stream Restoration and Relocation; Task 8 - Hydrologic Monitoring.
