Transit Bus Operator Performance and Attitudes Toward a Collision Warning System: Results of a Simulator Experiment

The goal of this research was to further the Federal Transit Administration's understanding of t he efficacy of a transit bus collision warning system (CWS) driver-vehicle interface and how such a system may be designed to be most effective and accepted by transit bus operators. A simulator experiment was designed and conducted to examine operator performance and opinions while using a CWS when encountering a critical or potentially hazardous event. The study was teamed with New York City Transit, the largest metropolitan transit agency in the United States, to conduct the experiment. The findings demonstrated that a CWS for transit bus operators can be accepted by the operators, but several technical areas need further development.
