Polymers in Concrete

Polymer cement concrete and polymer concrete were first introduced in the 1950s and, after a slow start, became very popular for reconstruction and repair projects in the 1970s. This paper reflects on the past and surveys the achievements within the concrete-polymer composite (C-PC) field in its first 50 years. The types of C-PCs are defined and the classification of C-PCs is discussed. A survey of literature and symposia addressing C-PCs shows that over 7,000 papers have been published and over 30 international seminars have been held on the subject of C-PCs since 1964. Current research is focusing on new resin binders as well as modifying properties using adhesion promoters and microfillers. Other fields of research for polymer concretes include attempts to improve some of their unfavorable properties, such as low fire resistance, and using polymer concrete in unconventional applications, such as the production of precast elements.
