A Policy on Design Standards Interstate System
The National System of Interstate and Defense Highways carries more traffic per kilometer than any other comparable national system. The highways of the system must be designed to ensure safety, permanence, utility, and flexibility to provide for predicted growth in traffic. All system highways must meet the minimum standards provided in this document. and values approaching the minimum here in must be used only where the use of higher values will result in unacceptable social, economic, or environmental consequences. The standards are provided for the following major categories: Design Traffic; Right-of-Way; Geometric Controls and Criteria; Cross Section Elements; Interchanges; and Bridges and Other Structures.
