ALGORITHMS FOR ESTIMATING THE AVERAGE SPEED, CONCENTRATION AND NUMBER OF VEHICLES ON A STRETCH OF ROAD, BY STATISTICAL FILTERING

ALGORITHMES D'ESTIMATION DE LA VITESSE MOYENNE, DE LA CONCENTRATION ET DU NOMBRE DE VEHICULES SUR UN TRONCON DE ROUTE, PAR FILTRAGE STATISTIQUE

The increasing difficulty of acquiring numerical data, in the study of a system, makes necessary the development of different processes of measurement and observation of the variables. Thus for a transport system, the mean speed, number of vehicles and their concentration in a stretch of road are the fundamental quantities to be estimated. The present work proposes for each of the stated variables the corresponding statistical evaluation process. The method utilised, based on the theory of numerical filtering, makes use of the "kalman filter" which is particularly well adapted to algorithmic calculations. Different real data have allowed the proposed formulae to be tested, particularly those resulting from experience on the A13 motorway on the outskirts of Paris. /TRRL/
