CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE SETTING AND CARBONATION OF MORTARS IN CONTACT WITH POROUS MATERIALS

The author studies the absorption of water by capillary suction and its effects on the setting and hardening of hydraulic mortars associated with porous materials. The study is restricted to the case where at least one of the faces of the porous material is in contact with ambient air during the setting of the binder. The mortars used are prepared from non porous mineral aggregate, dry mixed with portland cement or hydraulic lime. The first part gives the results of research into the movement of water through the intergranular spaces of the mortar and porous material; the second part deals with the study of the mechanical properties of the relation between a mortar and a porous material; the third part deals with the evolution of the physical/chemical characteristics of mortars subject to the action of carbon monoxide, emphasising the role played by the porous material. /TRRL/
