Economic Aspects of Improving the Croatian Maritime Passenger Shipping

Contemporary passenger shipping is part of liner shipping and plays an important part in the development of a coastal economy and tourism. This paper studies the economic aspects of improving the Croatian maritime passenger shipping industry by analyzing the features of passenger liner shipping compared to tramp shipping. Tramp, or tourist, shipping is that provided by the big modern ships intended for cruises. Liner passenger shipping provides regular lines for passengers and/or their automobiles by similar or same ships as those used for shipping cargo (with modifications). Liner passenger shipping includes traditional passenger ships, fast passenger ships, and RO/RO passenger ships (which resemble cruise ships). The authors focus on the leading passenger liner company in Croatia, the Jadrolinija, d.d., Rijeka. Other companies are also considered in a review of the needs of tourism and the promotion of the Croatian shipbuilding industry. The authors note that a complex approach to shipping, tourism, and shipbuilding is necessary to significantly assist in the restructuring of the Croatian economy and the stimulation of the export sector. In addition, improvement of transport infrastructure, modernizing the maritime passenger shipping fleet, and providing new services of better quality would lead to an increase in revenues in tourist enterprises as well as an increase in the profitability and employment in Croatian shipping companies.
