Traffic Volumes and Manoeuvring Area Capacities at European Capital City Airports

This article analyzes the current traffic volumes and maneuvering area capacities at European capital city airports. The authors note that, in its Airport Planning Manual, the International Civil Aviation Organization recommends that the capital city airports have at least two runways in order to avoid complete closing down of the airport (in case of aircraft accidents, weather, maintenance). The authors review the aircraft operations at 29 European capital cities. The results of their review show that only the largest ten airports have the capacities of maneuvering area that slightly exceed the traffic requirements. The least developed are the capital city airports located in the transition countries that became independent with disintegration of the USSR and Yugoslavia; almost half of the capital city airports with only one runway are in the Balkans.
