Travel Time Information Service Utilising Mobile Phone Tracking
This article considers the suitability of mobile phone positioning data for travel time information. The authors report on a study undertaken by the Finnish National Road Administration (Finnra) that included pilot installations on two road sections in order to determine the feasibility of mobile phone tracking for traffic monitoring and management purposes. The study results showed that the mobile phone positioning can provide useful link monitoring data such as travel time and speed. The authors conclude that mobile phone tracking is a promising tool for implementing travel time information services for drivers. The authors ponder whether the travel time service could be used for traffic forecasting purposes, or if the observations at the base station could be used as input for prediction models.
