Sleep Apnea Syndrome and Risk of Traffic Accidents
Sindrome de Apnea del Sueno y Accidentabilidad Vial
Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is considered a public health problem due to its high prevalence and to the complications that it produces. The most important public health problem caused by SAS is its impact on traffic accidents. This article, from a special issue on sleep disorders and driving, focuses on the interplay of SAS and driving. The author reviews several studies that show that patients with sleep apnea are poor drivers and have more auto accidents than other drivers. The use of nocturnal nasal CPAP drug therapy normalizes patients’ accident risks.
