A High Pressure Bar-Wrapped Concrete Cylinder Pipeline with Double-Gasketed Steel Joints

A 36-in. (900-mm) diameter high pressure bar-wrapped concrete cylinder pipe (CCP) water transmission main for the City of Prescott, Arizona was successfully tested to 500 psi pressure. This CCP pipeline utilized double-gasketed steel joints in non-thrust areas, and double-welded lap joints in thrust areas. A brief history of the steel bell and spigot joints with single and double confined gaskets is presented. The sealing capacity of gaskets in rigid, semi-rigid, and flexible type pipe joints is reviewed. Design concepts, procedures and gasket designs utilized to ensure the water tightness of the 36-in. (900-mm) diameter CCP joints of the City of Prescott's high pressure pipeline is discussed. Recommendations and conclusions for the use of double gasketed joints are presented.
