Proposal for Software Solution for Optimising the Staff of Train Rostering

This article considers the resources and factors that determine or influence to any extent the technological process of the staffing of trains (rostering). The authors describe the role of the Timetable, Train Traction and Traction Vehicle Maintenance Sector, and legal regulations, all of which stipulate the basic parameters for rostering. The authors also analyze the contents and the method of producing the rostering plan that shows all the practical drawbacks and the limiting factors. These factors influence the possibility of corrections in order to improve the utilization level of the staff of the trains. The authors developed a model of these factors, which includes the use of a software solution (Clipper) for train rostering. The authors use the Croatian Railways (HZ) as their representative railway. The authors conclude that the introduction of information technology for the staffing of train rostering means significant savings as a result of the optimization of their operation, much simpler planning for needs, and reduced problems with railway line closedowns due to repairs.
