Management of Sewers in Environmentally Sensitive Areas
The City of San Diego has approximately 480 km of sanitary sewers located in environmentally sensitive areas. Many of these areas are natural ravines or canyons that provide important habitat and aesthetic value. The City is implementing a program to review each of these sewers to see whether it would be feasible to relocate the sewers out of the canyon areas. This review includes hydraulic capacity analysis, sewer condition assessment, biological habitat assessment, and evaluation of maintenance access. The process also allows for input from community groups and local residents. Through this review process, the City intends to provide cost-effective wastewater collection services while protecting San Diego's canyon areas.
