Why Road Maintenance is Important and How to Get It Done
Highways contribute significantly to economic growth and development, and have a positive impact on social conditions. Roads that are not maintained well increase vehicle operating costs significantly, negatively impact mobility, increase traffic accident rates and their associated costs, and aggravate poverty, isolation, illiteracy and poor health in rural areas. This Note focuses on the social and economic importance of well and regularly maintained roads. It recommends methods of achieving highway maintenance that are sustainable and doable with scarce economic resources. It also provides references that offer more detailed information.
