Ship Component in Hull Optimization

The objective of this exercise is to identify the components in the power train of an all electric ship supplying ship power at 60Hz. The paper describes a method for quantifying the individual components of an 80 MW destroyer on a 14 day mission. Among the questions of interest are the following: 1) Turbine size generally decreases with speed. Are higher speed turbines favorable for naval ships? 2) Should gear boxes be employed to run the electrical generators at higher speeds? 3) Should both the turbine and the generator be driven at a common speed greater than 3600 RPM, and converter used to adjust the voltage and frequency? As the answer to all three questions is "No", the paper will give the reasons the answer is no, and a methodology for selecting the optimal power train. The paper will also show how to offset the difficulty with load scheduling and proper selection of the gas turbines a priori.
