Coordinating the Relocation of Large Diameter Water Lines for the Widening of IH-10
To meet the growing demand on the congested Interstate Highway 10 (IH-10) in west Houston, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has begun the project of widening IH-10. To accomplish this project, TxDOT is acquiring additional right-of-way (ROW), which includes the City of Houston's existing ROW known as Old Katy Road. Due to the presence of numerous utilities within the existing ROW, coordination was required between TxDOT and the City of Houston to relocate the utilities in an efficient manner within TxDOT's compressed schedule. This paper details how this project overcame numerous constraints and addressed critical issues. In addition, it demonstrates the importance of all the parties involved working together to provide aggressive solutions as issues arise, ensuring the successful completion of the City's water facility relocation.
