Investigation of Durability of Wearing Surfaces for FRP Bridge Decks
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has installed several fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bridge decks to date, both on state and local bridges, and plans to construct more in the future. Several of these decks have deteriorated to various degrees, and the wearing surface on some of the decks has been replaced. There is limited information on the durability of these wearing surfaces in the literature and thus based on limited experience it is not possible to develop standards for their future use. This information is very critical for the future use of FRP decks in replacing heavy decks on old load-posted bridges that require immediate attention. This report summarizes a comprehensive study on the durability of wearing surfaces used on FRP bridge decks. The primary purpose of this research was to determine acceptable wearing surface products for FRP decks.
