Taking It Off

This article discusses several methods and types of equipment available for effectively removing stripes from an asphalt surface. Grinding machines are efficient at removing any type of line, but they can leave an indentation on the surface since they remove the asphalt down to the lowest level the paint has penetrated. Water blasting can also remove any type of line markings without removing the surface of the pavement. Shot-blasting is a process in which small, metal beads are propelled at high speed toward a surface to remove paint. This process is self-contained, is a non-aggressive way to remove a line, and leaves a nice profile on the pavement surface. Shotblasting cannot be performed on a wet surface or on new asphalt, and it is not effective in removing tapes or thermoplastics.
