Bridge Annual Maintenance Prioritization under Uncertainty by Multiobjective Combinatorial Optimization

This article presents a general automatic procedure to prioritize annual maintenance interventions for deteriorating bridges over a designated time horizon. Multiple conflicting objectives associated with maximization of bridge performance and minimization of life cycle maintenance costs are considered simultaneously. The resulting combinatorial optimization problem is solved by a multiobjective genetic algorithm. Five different maintenance types, which have varied efficacies and unit costs, were considered. Numerical examples were provided to maintain the satisfactory performance of deteriorating reinforced concrete crossheads using the proposed procedure.
