2003 Illinois Crash Facts and Statistics

This report presents traffic accident statistics during the year 2003, for the state of Illinois. Some quick facts reported include the following: In 2003 1,454 people died in traffic accidents in the state of Illinois. The total estimated cost of traffic accidents in was $10.5 billion. There was an average of 1.1 deaths per each fatal crash. One hundred ninety pedestrians were killed. One hundred fifty two school children were injured in school bus accidents. Forty four people were killed in 31 fatal work zone crashes. There were 25,660 traffic accidents involving deer in 2003. One hundred fifty four people were killed in tractor-trailer accidents. There were 4,376 motorcycle accidents in 2003; and the number of motorcyclists killed increased by 43% over the previous year. Over fifty percent of the fatally injured drivers ages 16-24 who were tested had a positive blood alcohol concentration.
