Once in a Lifetime: Ensuring Paint Quality
Over the years, the protection and decoration of bridges has developed from an empirical exercise into a scientific discipline, as steel elements need to be protected against corrosion and concrete parts need protection against deterioration such as carbonization. Even though the modern material science has provided new developments that enable engineers to consider the protection of bridges over their whole lifetime, it is still not possible to extend protection across the entire design life, and maintenance and refurbishment are still important in life cycle consideration. The article discusses the importance of the lifetime protection choice in China.
